This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will develop new artificial intelligence (AI)-based forecasting tools to improve predictions of weather and air quality. The $543,185 project, awarded to the University of Tennessee, will leverage large datasets from satellites, ground monitors, and climate models to create faster, more accurate, and responsive forecasting capabilities compared to current numerical models. The AI-based approach will explicitly incorporate interactions between meteorology and air pollutants, enabling more realistic and scientifically grounded forecasts. The research outputs, including better air quality management, improved weather forecasting, and enhanced disaster preparedness, will be made available through online platforms. This 3-year project, starting on September 1, 2025, will also support a graduate student's work in this area.
