- The federal Project Grant award DESC0025109 for "TRANSFORMER CONDITION MONITORING" was provided by the Department of Energy's Office of Science Financial Assistance Program (CFDA 81.049). The $200,000.00 award, granted on July 22, 2024, supports the development of advanced sensor technologies by Sensanna Inc., a woman-owned and veteran-owned small business, to enable real-time monitoring of power transformer conditions. This project builds upon Sensanna's prior work with the Department...
- The National Science Foundation awarded Activecharge LLC a $256,000 Project Grant under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084) to develop an integrated, self-powered sensor node for wind turbine blade monitoring. The one-year project will address technical hurdles such as lack of reliable energy sources and logistical challenges replacing batteries inside blades. Activecharge will prototype a sensor node that reliably harvests electrical voltage from blade...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) Phase I STTR project with Sentec LLC in Greenville, SC aims to develop a high-temperature pressure sensor for a range of industrial applications. The $305,000 award, granted on June 15, 2025, will fund the design, fabrication, and testing of a circular membrane-based pressure sensor made of wide bandgap semiconductors that can operate at high temperatures where traditional silicon sensors are...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Engineering has awarded The Research Foundation for the State University of New York (RF-SUNY) a $240,497 Project Grant under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to develop data-driven digital twin models for solid-state transformers (SSTs) to improve their reliability. The key objectives of this 3-year project are to: 1) develop online health monitoring and diagnostics capabilities to predict and prevent failures of SST components,...
The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Infinion Technology, Inc. a $304,948 STTR Phase I project grant under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program. This two-year project aims to develop an electronic partial discharge (PD) monitoring system to improve the reliability of the U.S. energy grid by predicting transformer failures. The technology will enable real-time, cost-effective PD monitoring of transformers, over two-thirds of which are at or past their expected lifespan. This will allow electric companies to make informed maintenance decisions and mitigate the risk of catastrophic transformer failure. The project leverages a novel, patented sensor technology that can collect high-quality PD data at a rate two orders of magnitude higher than traditional sensors, overcoming bandwidth and signal-to-noise limitations to improve PD detection accuracy. This innovation could ultimately enable PD monitoring of other electrically insulated components beyond transformers, such as switchgears, inverters, generators, and electric motors.
