This $350,000 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program will fund research by North Carolina State University (NC State) to develop a geometric framework for incorporating randomness into algorithms used to solve complex mathematical models. The research will focus on developing new strategies and methodologies to effectively incorporate randomness into the mathematical representations and design of efficient randomized solution algorithms for problems in areas such as data analysis, artificial intelligence, geophysics, signal processing, and medical imaging. The project aims to provide common principles to analyze the asymptotic behavior of stochastic algorithms for convex feasibility problems and multivariate systems of structured monotone inclusions, with extensions beyond the monotone/convex setting also planned. The theoretical and algorithmic findings will be applied to problems in signal processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, inverse problems, statistical biology, and medical imaging. The project will also train graduate students as part of the research plan.
