This $249,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program will support collaborative research to transform haptic graphical user interfaces by leveraging dynamic behaviors of soft materials. The project aims to develop novel tactile haptic technologies for digital illustrations, with three main objectives: 1) identifying the potential of stimuli-responsive soft materials to create haptic pixels for rendering black and white graphical information through touch, 2) incorporating dynamic material response into tactile pixels to expand the capabilities of rendered graphical content, and 3) augmenting the richness of graphical content rendered for users through increased dynamic mechanical capabilities of tactile pixels. This work will bridge the gap between materials, haptics, and human-computer interaction research to create new tactile digital expressions and enable new user interfaces and interactions through this underutilized information channel. The award will be performed by the Regents of the University of Minnesota, a prominent land-grant research institution, from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2028.
