- This $263,663 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will fund a collaborative research project to evaluate the impacts of toxic dust from the shrinking Great Salt Lake on agriculture and ecosystems. The project, led by the Trustees of Indiana University, will examine how wind-blown dust containing heavy metals deposited from the exposed lakebed threatens public health, agriculture, and regional ecosystems. The researchers will study the...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) project grant, titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: RUI: EVALUATING THE IMPACTS OF TOXIC DUST FROM THE GREAT SALT LAKE ON AGRICULTURE AND ECOSYSTEMS", will be conducted by Colby College over the period from 09/01/2026 to 08/31/2029 with $480,175 in total funding. The project aims to shed light on the role that toxic dust from the shrinking Great Salt Lake plays in depositing heavy metals like arsenic and lead into...
- The National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) awarded a $185,043 Project Grant to the University of Utah to conduct collaborative research on assessing current and future dust flux from the Northern Great Plains region of the United States under extreme climate variability. The research team will collect historical weather data and aerial photography to document drought conditions and wind erosion potential in the region during the 1930s Dust Bowl era, and use a portable...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) has awarded Utah State University (USU) a $498,424 five-year CAREER grant starting on July 1, 2024. The objective of this project is to advance the fundamental understanding of how plant ecosystems respond to exposure from salt-rich dust storms generated by the exposed dry lakebeds of inland saline lakes, such as the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The project will integrate laboratory and field methods with hyperspectral imaging...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) awarded a $377,096 Project Grant to the University of South Dakota for a 3-year collaborative research project from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2028. The project aims to assess current and future dust flux from the Northern Great Plains region of the U.S. under extreme climate variability, drawing insights from the 1930s Dust Bowl drought. Key activities include collecting historical weather and drought data, measuring...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) awarded a $300,000 project grant to the University of Toledo for the period of July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027. The grant, titled "C2H2 EAGER: REDOX-DRIVEN MOBILIZATION AND AEROSOLIZATION OF HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOM TOXINS IN LAKE ERIE STRESSED SOILS," will investigate the hypothesis that wind-blown dust from coastal soils near Lake Erie can contain high concentrations of algal bloom-generated neurotoxins. This research...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $300,000 Project Grant under the Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Mississippi. The grant titled "C2H2 EAGER: PARTICLES OF PERIL: ANALYZING MINERAL DUST STORMS AND THEIR HEALTH EFFECTS USING REMOTE SENSING AND MACHINE LEARNING" will fund research to better understand the health impacts and hospitalization rates related to dust storms in the U.S. Southwest. The project combines satellite remote sensing data and...
- The University of Utah will receive $345,496 under a two-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences through the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to develop new methods for measuring mercury and methylmercury isotopes in high-salinity, high-dissolved organic matter environments. Current methods cannot be used in these conditions, inhibiting understanding of mercury pathways into wildlife. The University will work with the U.S. Geological Survey to devise...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) provides $571,485 to the Nevada System of Higher Education's Desert Research Institute (DRI) to conduct research on the light scattering effects of mineral dust particles in the atmosphere. The research aims to improve remote sensing capabilities for monitoring dust aerosols, which impact climate, weather, and human health. The award will fund laboratory measurements and advanced data analysis...
- This $800,565 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports research by the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Scripps Institution of Oceanography to explore the meteorological drivers of global mineral dust emissions. The project will leverage high-resolution climate model simulations to investigate the role of two key wind event types - downslope windstorms and haboobs - in generating atmospheric dust, and incorporate the...
