The project aims to study the impact of geometry and permeability of microcompartments in two distantly related bacteria under varying realistic environments, with the goal of gaining...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $330,000 Project Grant under the Engineering (CFDA 47.041) program to the Regents of the University of Michigan to conduct collaborative research on engineering catalyst selectivity for the deconstruction and re-synthesis of biomass and waste plastic feedstocks. The research aims to develop a fundamental understanding of how tuning catalyst architecture can enable selective cleavage of carbon-oxygen bonds in multifunctional organic molecules...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems under CFDA program 47.041 Engineering is focused on collaborative research to link nanoscale heterogeneities with macroscale reactivity of electrocatalytic materials. The $283,480 award, with a performance period from August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2028, aims to investigate how tiny structural differences in materials can affect their performance and...
- This Project Grant award of $500,000 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program (CFDA 47.070) to the Regents of the University of Michigan will support research to develop extrapolation-aware conditional molecule generation and experimental design methods. The goal is to discover new molecules with desired properties for applications in energy storage, addressing challenges in the traditional trial-and-error and...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (CFDA 47.041 - Engineering) in the amount of $557,722.00 will support research by the Regents of the University of Michigan to advance the fundamental understanding of electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) for upgrading bio-oil into sustainable transportation fuels. The key objectives are to: 1) Understand ECH of individual model organic molecules, 2) Elucidate how organic mixtures can enhance or slow ECH, and 3) Design systems for...
- This federal Project Grant award, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), will support a collaborative research project to investigate the relationship between nanoscale material defects and macroscale reactivity of electrocatalytic materials. The $221,000 award, with a performance period from August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2028, will enable researchers from Duke University to employ advanced experimental and computational techniques to understand how...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation provides $1,367,545 to the University of Michigan under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) from October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2025. The funding supports collaborative research titled "Machine Learning-Aided Discovery of Synthesizable, Active and Stable Heterogeneous Catalysts." The Engineering program seeks to improve quality of life and economic strength through innovation and excellence in engineering research. This...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) provides $317,739 to Michigan State University to conduct research on enhancing the performance of room-temperature sodium-sulfur (Na-S) batteries. The research aims to elucidate the effects of cation and anion doping on molybdenum disulfide (MoSe2) electrocatalysts to improve the immobilization and catalytic conversion of sodium polysulfides, which currently hinder the widespread adoption of Na-S...
This $550,000 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) supports research at Michigan State University to develop new electrode interfaces and synthetic NADH mimics to enable rapid, selective regeneration of NADH-like cofactors using electricity. The project consists of three synergistic aims: (1) using thermostable NADH dehydrogenases to create NADH mimics that can be regenerated via mediated bioelectrocatalysis, (2) developing sterically and electronically tuned NADH mimics that favor enzymatically active 1,4-dihydro species during direct electrochemical reduction, and (3) creating electrochemically reversible pyridinium-based redox mediators that mimic NADH function through single-electron transfer to flavin-containing enzymes. The project will also create new technical training opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals to build a talent pipeline aligned with advanced biomanufacturing needs. The award period runs from Sep 1, 2025 to Aug 31, 2030.
