This federal Project Grant award for $150,000 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program funds research projects that aim to understand how countries leverage their international economic relationships to pursue geopolitical and economic objectives. The award supports five interrelated research projects that:
Develop a theoretical framework to model how countries can use their economic relationships to influence foreign policies and activities.
Examine the tradeoffs between economic security and integration, and provide a model-based measure of national economic power.
Investigate great power competition and how it shapes international economic activities and political relationships.
Analyze the geopolitics of currency competition and the benefits of having a reserve currency.
Evaluate international competition and cooperation over corporate tax regimes.
The research findings could help policymakers and researchers gain deeper insights into the drivers of international relations and the influence of geoeconomic factors. The award was made to the National Bureau of Economic Research Inc. (NBER), a private non-profit research organization, and runs from March 2025 through February 2030.
