This National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program grant, awarded to the University of Puerto Rico Research and Development Center Division, totaling $503,930 and effective April 1, 2025, supports the development of a distributed wearable computing sensor network for advanced health monitoring and biomechanics analysis. The project aims to address the limitations of wearable devices, such as computational power, battery capacity, data privacy, and user comfort, through a novel distributed machine learning architecture deployed on field programmable gate arrays. This research will contribute to deploying improved in-home health monitoring tools for frail populations, including post-COVID patients. The educational components of the project focus on providing research training and coursework for graduate and undergraduate students, particularly from underrepresented groups, in areas such as edge computing, real-time systems, and machine learning applications to healthcare.
