The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) received a $1,000,000 Project Grant under the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to improve urban snow modeling and resilience in Anchorage, Alaska. The 3-year project, beginning March 1, 2025, will examine the impacts of heavy snow loads, enhance predictive models, and develop management strategies to prevent building collapse and protect life and infrastructure. UAA will work with community partners to quantify the link between ground-based snowpack observations and roof snow loads, creating a more sophisticated model to improve hazard warnings. The project will also engage high school students to measure snowpack properties and build the STEM workforce. The findings can be applied to other Alaskan urban areas and regions facing similar snow-related challenges.
