This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award, valued at $999,732 and effective August 1, 2025, will develop tools and solution alternatives for coastal communities impacted by compounding flood hazards from multiple simultaneous sources. The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. will partner with local organizations in San Juan, Puerto Rico to use advanced computer models and affordable flood sensors to improve flood modeling. The project will produce guidelines for integrating local perspectives into designing flood-mitigating infrastructure, identifying flood zones, and developing evacuation maps and early warning systems for vulnerable residents. The research team will develop efficient, inclusive methodologies to accurately assess coastal floods utilizing local knowledge and physics-based numerical modeling techniques to better understand compound flood dynamics. The project will deliver several direct, immediate solutions to the community, including resilient infrastructure plans, a pilot impact-based forecast, and a web dashboard for flood sensor monitoring, as well as long-term flood risk maps and improved local rainfall forecasts.
