The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), through its Office of Research, is conducting a $169,084 project grant awarded on December 1, 2024 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). The project, titled "HORMESIS RESPONCES IN PHYTOPLANKTON NANOTOXICOLOGY AND IMPLICATIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ASSESSMENT", aims to systematically evaluate the frequency and intensity of hormesis responses in different phytoplankton species exposed to a variety of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs). The research will also assess the effect of environmental variables on hormesis, improve understanding of the key mechanisms driving stimulatory responses, explore the environmental implications using artificial intelligence, and evaluate potential environmental risk assessment scenarios. This collaborative project between UCSB and researchers from the Université de Genève in Switzerland is intended to provide a strong underpinning for decision-making by regulators, industrial product designers, and the public regarding the safe and sustainable use of nanotechnology.
