The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $997,575 Project Grant under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CFDA 47.070) program to the American Institutes for Research (AIR) to support the "COMPUTER SCIENCE FOR ALL K-14 PATHWAYS: STRENGTHENING ELEMENTARY PATHWAYS CURRICULUM IN RURAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS WITH LOCAL INDUSTRIES" project. This research-practice partnership between AIR, Bootup Professional Development, the Idaho STEM Action Center, Oregon Department of Education, and Washington Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction aims to develop and implement plans for elementary computer science (CS) pathways in rural communities across the Pacific Northwest. The key objectives are to further refine a theory of action for elementary CS pathway development in rural areas, advance progress toward locally relevant elementary CS pathways in Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, and expand the partnership to include diverse stakeholder perspectives. The project will conduct landscape surveys, district interviews, and CS visioning workshops, as well as support three Idaho districts in tailoring an existing elementary CS curriculum to local industry needs and student interests.
