The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $509,999 project grant under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program to the American Institutes for Research (AIR) and its partners at North Carolina State University, Partner to Improve, and rural North Carolina school districts. The "AI by 8" project aims to establish a research-practice partnership that will introduce artificial intelligence (AI) concepts, practices, and perspectives into K-2 elementary classrooms in rural North Carolina. The project will directly impact 30 teachers and approximately 600 students, focusing on developing at least 20 unplugged AI-focused English Language Arts lessons tailored to the unique assets of rural districts. The research will explore factors impacting K-2 teachers' adoption of AI instruction, student engagement, teacher self-efficacy, and professional development needs. This project is funded from October 1, 2024, through September 30, 2027.
