This $416,131 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) is funding the development of an advanced, low-cost multi-constellation, triple frequency ionospheric scintillation and electron content monitor. The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), the prime awardee, will create this instrument to study disturbances in the Earth's upper atmosphere using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as the U.S. Global Positioning System. The new monitors will improve imaging capabilities when deployed in dense networks, advancing the understanding of environmental variabilities related to events like volcanic eruptions, thunderstorms, and tsunamis. The project also aims to provide STEM education and training, as well as create engaging public exhibits about the geospace environment. No sub-awards are planned under this grant, which has an award date of November 15, 2024 and an ultimate completion date of October 31, 2028.
