The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $1,000,000 Project Grant under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program to the University of Arizona, a Hispanic Serving Institution, to develop and implement the Graduate Communities for Academic Fellowship and Efficacy (GRAD CAFE) program. This multi-year initiative, running from October 2024 to September 2029, aims to increase the recruitment, retention, and completion of underrepresented doctoral students in STEM fields at the university. GRAD CAFE is a holistic, multi-tiered mentoring program that provides peer-to-peer and near-peer mentoring, along with professional development and leadership training, to support the academic, career, and well-being needs of underrepresented STEM graduate students. The program seeks to create an inclusive community and address key challenges such as mental health, lack of diversity, and gaps in retention and completion for these students. Formative and summative assessments will be conducted to measure the impact of the program on participants' sense of capacity, self-efficacy, interest, belonging, satisfaction, retention, and completion rates compared to non-participants.
