The University of Southern California (USC) received a $650,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to develop an AI model that better understands fault dynamics and stress transfer mechanisms in complex fault systems. The 3-year project builds a multiphysics fault network model to discover reduced-order governing equations describing the evolution of stress and stability within fault networks. This work aims to enable improved assessment of regional earthquake and hazard probabilities in tectonically active regions, as well as provide insights into sustainable energy processes. The project will also include joint workshops on AI in computational mechanics and seismology to train and recruit a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students. No sub-awards are planned for this grant.
