This Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) provides $107,128 to The Research Foundation For The State University Of New York (doing business as Stony Brook University) to conduct collaborative research on the relationships between seismic and petrological Moho discontinuities and their implications for lithospheric processes. The key objectives are to: 1) characterize the seismic wave speeds above and below the seismic Moho, 2) assess the sharpness of the Moho and its relationship to the crust-mantle boundary, and 3) develop an interactive map and calculation tool to display tradeoffs between shear wave velocity, temperature, Moho depth, and compositional structure. This research seeks to improve understanding of continental crust formation and evolution, with anticipated results to be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and the interactive geoscience tool. The award period runs from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027 and supports a graduate student, early-career/soft-money PIs, and undergraduate/high school internship opportunities.
