This $2,000,000 project grant, awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program, will support the "Cohorts, Research Experiences, Academics, Teams, and Exploration to Support STEM Scholars" (CREATE) initiative at Roosevelt University, a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution. Over 6 years, the grant will fund scholarships for up to 37 high-achieving, low-income undergraduate students pursuing degrees in biology, biochemistry, computer science, and cyber/information security. In addition to the scholarship support, the project will provide co-curricular activities such as mentoring, cohort development, research experiences, leadership training, and family/community engagement to improve STEM degree completion, retention, and student engagement. The project aims to strengthen participants' sense of belonging, science identity, and academic capital through this multifaceted, research-based approach. Findings from the project's evaluation will be disseminated to stakeholders to advance understanding of effective financial and co-curricular supports for retaining and graduating low-income STEM students.
