This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award of $230,079 to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) will fund the construction and deployment of 11 new instruments to measure diffuse hydrothermal flow at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge's Lucky Strike vent site. The project aims to quantify the heat and chemical element fluxes from these diffuse discharge zones, which are difficult to detect and measure but play a critical role in the exchange of heat and mass between the ocean and Earth's crust. The data collected by the instruments will be integrated with contemporaneous observatory data to investigate the relationship between diffuse hydrothermal flow and oceanographic, geological, and biological processes. This research project, scheduled to run from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2027, will help address a long-standing challenge in understanding mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal systems.
