The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $324,986 Project Grant under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program to Florida International University (FIU) on September 1, 2024. The goal of this 2-year project is to assess how environmental factors, including food availability, predation risk, and boating activity, affect the behavior and habitat use of coastal dolphins in an urbanized marine ecosystem. The project will use innovative methods such as environmental DNA sampling, underwater video, and active acoustics to map prey landscapes and benthic habitats. Researchers will then integrate this data with observations on dolphin behavior, boat traffic, and predation risk to develop a predictive framework for understanding how marine predators respond to anthropogenic and natural drivers in highly impacted coastal areas. The anticipated results will advance the capacity to forecast changes in movement, habitat use, and behavior of coastal marine predators, providing critical information for stock assessment and management.
