The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $548,224 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to The Regents of the University of Colorado, Boulder. The grant supports research on rock glaciers in Colorado's mountains to better understand Holocene climate history, weathering, hydrology, and landscape evolution. The project expands on previous work to measure rock glacier velocity, surface age profiles using cosmogenic nuclides, stream discharge and quality, mass balance, and changes in rock headwall positions. This data will be used to develop numerical models that capture the continuum from pure ice glaciers to rock glaciers and explain their differing responses to climate change. The research aims to promote a broad distribution of results through public outreach and connect with local middle schools, as well as contribute to a new interdisciplinary climate science minor at the University. The award period is from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2027.
