This $415,880 federal Project Grant award was provided by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to Oregon State University. The award will fund a collaborative research project to test models for the fluvial response to the Eocene terrane collision in western Oregon, using integrated tectono-stratigraphy and detrital provenance analysis. The project aims to understand the interactions between tectonic and surface processes that controlled the topographic evolution in the region during the collision of the Siletz oceanic terrane with western North America, and the subsequent post-collision adjustments. The research will apply a combination of field observations, isotopic dating, basin subsidence analysis, and detrital thermochronology techniques to generate new insights into the regional surface response to the collision-related mountain building and post-collision reorganization. The project will engage undergraduate students from Lane Community College and the University of Oregon in the research, providing them with a unique opportunity to conduct place-based investigations of the deep-time geologic history of Oregon. The award period is from September 15, 2024 to August 31, 2027.
