This National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) Project Grant award to the University of Wisconsin System provides $399,938 to develop and test a "Productive Failure Intervention" video series aimed at improving college students' belonging and persistence in STEM courses. The project will create a set of videos featuring stories from successful scientists discussing how they leveraged productive responses to personal and scientific failures, with control videos that do not address productive failure responses. The impact of the intervention on students' failure responses will be evaluated through student surveys and an impossible-to-solve video game task. The final video intervention will be made freely available for college STEM instructors to incorporate into their courses, and it will also be integrated into the instructor training program for a microbiology course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) called Tiny Earth. Evaluation findings will be published and presented to disseminate the intervention.
