The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $399,996 STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) project grant to Arizona State University (ASU) to explore strategies for supporting student retention of foundational mathematical skills during academic breaks and unplanned disruptions. The "Keep in School Shape (KISS)" program at ASU will use readily available online survey software to send students daily review activities, resources, and feedback to help them maintain critical calculus skills when not in traditional classroom instruction. The project aims to understand how student engagement with the review activities impacts outcomes, the effectiveness of various incentive structures, and how to design appealing outside-of-class supports to promote student success. Research and evaluation results will be broadly disseminated to inform the adaptation of the KISS program to other institutions and disciplines beyond mathematics.
