This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) supports research at Florida International University (FIU) to develop a three-dimensional computational model of leaf development. The $336,380 award will enable FIU to: (1) create new image analysis methods to characterize the 3D structural diversity of plant leaves, (2) develop a 3D computational model of leaf development incorporating major tissue types, and (3) investigate how structural variation at the cell and tissue levels impacts the mechanical and functional properties of leaves. This research aims to advance the understanding of self-assembly in biological materials and inform the development of multi-functional, biomimetic materials through self-assembly. The project will also provide educational opportunities for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students.
