This $427,699 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support research to improve the understanding of the conditions that produce magmas that form copper deposits, specifically in the porphyry copper systems of Sonora, Mexico. The project aims to test models of porphyry copper deposit formation, develop geochemical tools to aid in the discovery of new deposits, and ensure the future availability of copper, which is critical for the transition to renewable energy. The research will be conducted by the University of Illinois and will train a Latino early-career scientist, a graduate student, and two undergraduate students from underrepresented groups in STEM fields. The project will also enhance collaboration between U.S. and Mexican researchers through joint fieldwork.
