The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $500,000 Project Grant under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program to the Research Foundation of the City University of New York (RFCUNY) to establish a campus-wide culture of undergraduate research at Kingsborough Community College. The 3-year project aims to:
- Develop a discipline-neutral project management template for integrating research experiences into courses and non-course activities;
- Create and implement faculty professional development to promote data-centric undergraduate research; and
- Design resources and processes for transitioning course-based research experiences into non-course undergraduate research.
The project leverages evidence-based practices to recruit and retain STEM students through providing authentic research opportunities, with a focus on biological, social, economic, and behavioral sciences. The mixed-methods investigation will assess project effectiveness, outcomes, and processes to inform efforts to sustain a culture of undergraduate research at the institution and serve as a model for other two-year colleges.
