This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) program provides $100,000 in funding to Illinois State University (ISU) to conduct research on quantum information and interference in transport phenomena. The project aims to advance the fundamental understanding of quantum coherence, entanglement, and information processing, with the goal of addressing critical challenges in quantum information science (QIS). Key research objectives include determining the information content of quantum interference features in transport, and developing theoretical and computational tools to model experimentally viable systems for measuring quantum information properties. This work is expected to provide new insights into interacting nonequilibrium quantum systems and establish alternative strategies to address longstanding problems in QIS. The project will also directly involve undergraduate students at ISU in the research, contributing to the preparation of the next generation of scientists in this important and rapidly evolving field. The grant award period runs from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027.
