The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has been awarded a $623,267 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop a visual tool for countering racial microaggressions in STEM environments. Through an iterative design process, the project will generate an innovative approach called the STEM Educator Series on Student Interactions (SESSI) to help STEM educators learn and apply inclusive behaviors that support aspiring Hispanic and Black scientists and engineers. The project aims to improve STEM student engagement, belonging, persistence, and academic efficacy by addressing interpersonal biases and racial microaggressions in academic settings. This work aligns with the NSF's broader efforts to center the voices and experiences of communities impacted by systemic inequities within STEM education and the workforce.
