This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program award, CFDA 47.050, provides $437,806 to the Regents of the University of Minnesota, Office of Sponsored Projects Administration, to conduct collaborative research on the molecular speciation of trace elements like iron, copper, zinc, and manganese in the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continental shelf. The research aims to identify the organic ligands that bind to these biologically essential metals, and determine their sources and reactivity, in order to better understand trace element cycling in the region. The project will assess biological ligand production as the ecosystem shifts from low to high productivity conditions, measure changes in ligand accumulation and composition in deep water masses, and investigate the role of sea ice on metal-ligand dynamics. Two graduate students and undergraduate interns will be supported and trained through this research effort, which runs from October 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024.
