This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program Project Grant, awarded to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) on December 15, 2023 for $217,938.00, will fund the MEZCAL project to expand observation-based records of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) spatially and over time. The key objectives are to: 1) Design and implement a spatiotemporally complete AMOC framework from indirect observations; 2) Extend AMOC records backwards in time using machine learning and adjoint methods; and 3) Make recommendations for an enhanced AMOC monitoring system. This collaborative research effort between the U.S. and U.K. will support two early career scientists and a postdoc, and communicate project findings to a broad audience, including coastal stakeholders. The results will advance scientific understanding of climate system changes and help improve climate models.
