The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $132,605 project grant under its Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to the University of Southern California (USC) Department of Contracts and Grants. This grant will fund research to advance the state-of-the-art in connected and automated vehicle (CAV) systems through innovations in networking, sensing, and edge computing. The research team will develop an integrated platform that strategically aggregates wireless communication technologies, enables cooperative sensing and perception, and partitions computation between vehicles and infrastructure to meet the real-time requirements of CAV applications. Key focus areas include enhancing network performance, creating a scalable cooperative sensing framework, and optimizing resource-aware computation. This interdisciplinary project is expected to benefit multiple stakeholders in the CAV ecosystem, including drivers, pedestrians, manufacturers, and transportation agencies, ultimately improving the safety and mobility of the nation's transportation system.
