This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Astronomical Sciences under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Federal Grant Program (CFDA 47.049) provides $507,204 to the University of Texas at Austin to study intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) in extreme emission line galaxies. The primary objectives are to (1) learn more about the conditions in which IMBHs thrive or fail to exist, and (2) constrain the source of high-energy ionizing radiation in these galaxies. The research team will employ spectral energy distribution and line fitting to diagnose the contribution of IMBHs to the ionizing continuum, measure IMBH masses using photoionization models, and inform the growth history of supermassive black holes. This research aims to address outstanding challenges that have obscured a clear view of IMBHs and provide an exciting opportunity to bring together diverse astronomers and prepare students for graduate studies. The project period runs from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027.
