This National Science Foundation (NSF) Discovery Research PreK-12 (DRK-12) program grant, with a total funding of $1,188,628, will support a collaborative research project at Purdue University examining how integrated STEM instruction can foster middle school students' learning of science and engineering content and practices. The project will co-design, implement, and refine two STEM curriculum units with an environmental justice orientation, engaging nearly 2,000 students, including many from underrepresented groups, in community-based service projects. The goal is to develop cognitively-grounded, research-based integrated STEM units that lead to robust learning of science and engineering while addressing relevant environmental issues. The project will also provide professional development for middle school science teachers and analyze student learning outcomes. This award reflects NSF's mission to significantly enhance STEM learning and teaching for PreK-12 students and teachers through innovative resources, models, and tools.
