The University of South Carolina (USC) has been awarded a $422,847 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct research on the influence of natural and human-induced activities on atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions and oxidation chemistry. The project aims to (1) quantify the interplay of volcanic eruptions with NOx oxidation chemistry and emissions, (2) assess the influence of natural climate change, specifically the Little Ice Age, on atmospheric oxidation chemistry, and (3) examine the impact of human activities on oxidation chemistry and NOx emissions. The research will analyze nitrate preserved in an ice core from a mid-latitude glacier to reconstruct a comprehensive, over 100-year record of past mid-latitude atmospheric composition and NOx oxidation chemistry. This project will support an early-career scientist, train a graduate student, and engage underprivileged high school students through the ACS SEED program. The award period is from May 1, 2024, to April 30, 2027.
