The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $268,902 Project Grant under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CFDA 47.070) federal grant program to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The grant, effective June 15, 2024 through May 31, 2027, supports RPI's research on "Collaborative Research: CPS: Small: Neuro-Symbolic Bridge: From Perception to Estimation & Control".

The project aims to address the fundamental mismatch between the uncertainty of neural network (NN) outputs and the assumptions of downstream symbolic components in modern cyber-physical systems (CPS). RPI will develop novel neuro-symbolic calibration and training methods to better align NN perception with the requirements of symbolic state estimation and control tasks, enabling safer and more predictable CPS applications across domains such as transportation, agriculture, and medicine. The research will be demonstrated on a 1/10-scale autonomous racing platform, the F1/10 car. Additionally, RPI plans to develop a graduate course on NN calibration to educate students on addressing the adverse effects of miscalibration in CPS.
