This National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) federal grant award of $296,664 to Northern Arizona University (NAU) aims to advance cyberinfrastructure research through the development of new similarity search algorithms optimized for processing-in-memory (PIM) architectures. The project will design PIM-aware data structures and search algorithms for high-dimensional point and polygon datasets common to scientific workloads in fields such as geoscience, pathology, astronomy, and solar physics. The research will leverage performance modeling techniques to guide the algorithmic innovations and also propose a communication-efficient library and programming interface to improve productivity for search-and-refine workloads on PIM systems. The project will provide training for graduate students and develop educational materials to disseminate the research outcomes through workshops and classroom deployment. The award has a performance period from July 2024 to June 2027.
