The National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) awarded a $185,453 Project Grant to the University of Southern California (USC) for a 2-year collaborative research project titled "P4CLIMATE--A PALEO PERSPECTIVE ON THE LINKS BETWEEN CLIMATE AND FOOD SECURITY." This project aims to quantitatively assess shifts in maize production in North America over the past 1,200 years by merging paleoclimate, weather generation, and crop modeling data. The research will leverage recent advancements in data synthesis, climate field reconstruction tools, and machine learning-based downscaling methods to provide sub-seasonally resolved, high-resolution outputs relevant for regional agricultural modeling. The potential broader impacts include reconstructing past hydrology, water resources, and ecological conditions to inform agricultural changes in a future warmer world, as well as outreach activities to share methodologies with STEM education communities. No sub-awards are planned under this grant.
