The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a Project Grant under the Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) in the amount of $893,081 to Duke University on August 15, 2024. The grant will support a collaborative research project to improve the understanding and forecasting of how coastlines respond to shifts in storm climate patterns and sea-level rise over timescales ranging from a year to a century. The project will develop new approaches to downscale global climate model outputs to produce forecasts of waves and winds affecting specific coastlines, such as the Carolinas. These downscaled data will then drive coupled models to hindcast and forecast changes in coastline shape and position in response to storm/wave climate shifts, sea-level rise, and inlet dynamics. The research team will conduct a model intercomparison workshop to accelerate coastal science by comparing model results with historical observations. The project aims to revolutionize the scientific community's ability to understand and predict long-term shoreline change patterns, which is critical for coastal communities facing increasing threats from climate change.
