The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Chemistry has awarded a $575,000 Project Grant to the University of Vermont & State Agricultural College under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program to support the "Design and Development of the Allyl Cyanamide Rearrangement" research project. This research aims to develop new synthetic methods and reaction mechanisms involving the allyl cyanamide rearrangement, which produces reactive guanidine intermediates with applications in pharmaceutical chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, catalysis, and materials science. The 3-year project will explore the use of orthogonal transition state perturbations to improve the stereoselectivity and efficiency of the rearrangement, as well as couple it with other reactions to increase the structural complexity of the guanidine products. The project will also provide research training opportunities for graduate students, undergraduates, and high school students through the NSF Project SEED program. No sub-awards are planned under this grant.
