This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) Project Grant award of $100,000 provides funding to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) to host a new 3-year Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site focused on materials science and engineering. The REU site will support 10 undergraduate students per year for 10 weeks of hands-on research and learning experiences related to the structure, processing, properties, and performance of materials and nano/biomaterials. The program aims to strengthen participants' academic, research, technical, and professional skills, while exposing them to advanced degree opportunities in materials science and engineering. Students will be encouraged to present their research at local and national conferences. This award is supported in part by the NSF Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Program, which seeks to enhance STEM education and broaden participation at Minority Serving Institutions.
