The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $456,613 Project Grant under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program to Temple University. The grant will fund a 3-year undergraduate research program, titled "REU SITE: HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING (HPC) TOOLS, TECHNIQUES, AND RESEARCH ACROSS THE PHYSICAL SCIENCES", that provides 10 students per year from two-year colleges, liberal arts colleges, and historically black colleges and universities with research experiences in high-performance computing and its applications in fields like chemistry, physics, and materials science. The program aims to increase access to undergraduate research, especially for underrepresented and underserved students, and train a diverse technical workforce. The project will involve hands-on activities such as building a computing cluster and conducting independent research projects using advanced computational techniques like molecular dynamics, machine learning, and simulations of nuclear matter and protein folding.
