The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Chemistry awarded a $575,000 Project Grant to Trustees of Indiana University, doing business as Indiana University, to conduct research on a new class of molecules and solids derived from diatomic analogs of cyanide, known as cyaphide (CP) and cyarside (CAS) ions. The primary objectives of this 3-year project are to develop novel organometallic compounds containing these functional groups and explore their use in enhancing magnetic communication between metal centers in oligomeric, polymeric, and extended solid structures. The project aims to obtain organic and transition metal complexes with CP and CAS groups to enable comparisons with analogous cyanide (CN) complexes. The research team will leverage computational chemistry to complement the experimental work. This project will also provide research training opportunities for undergraduate, high school, and graduate students, and create a public-facing educational resource on the research.
