This $819,984 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) aims to develop smart industrial robots that provide personalized support for autistic employees in manufacturing and STEM work environments. The primary objectives are to: (1) co-create support approaches based on self-determination theory to address the fundamental psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness for autistic workers, and (2) enhance robot intelligence to accurately identify and meet these needs, resulting in adaptive and personalized support. By integrating this neuro-affirming support into industrial robot design, the project seeks to increase motivation, work quality, and job satisfaction for autistic employees, thereby promoting inclusion, productivity, and innovation in the STEM workforce. This 5-year collaborative research project will be led by Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and is expected to be completed by July 31, 2029.
