The National Science Foundation's STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program has awarded a $499,989 Project Grant to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) to implement the "HSI IMPLEMENTATION AND EVALUATION PROJECT: INTEGRATED NETWORKING, SCHOLARSHIP, AND PEER MENTORING OF FRESHMEN ENGINEERS FOR INCREASED ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND GRADUATION RATES." This 5-year project aims to provide academic and social support to UCSB engineering and computer science freshmen with "effectors of opportunity" such as first-generation college students, low-income, and underrepresented minority students. The goal is to increase the retention and graduation rates of these students through a curriculum that integrates academic and social support, as well as peer mentoring. The project will research how this holistic approach impacts students' internal narratives around success, intrinsic motivation, and use of social support networks. This work seeks to generate new knowledge on effective peer mentoring and first-year retention strategies at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).
