The University of Hawaii (UH) received a $269,808 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program to conduct archaeological research on the development of social complexity in ancient societies. The 5-year project aims to understand how variations in household interactions, activities, roles, and relationships within and between communities led to the emergence of regionally-integrated socially complex societies. Through regional-scale settlement surveys, field mapping, and artifact analysis, the research will elucidate aspects of community organization and characterize any variation in standards of living, prestige, ritual, and productive activities between households. The project also fosters scholarly collaboration, provides student training, and disseminates findings through scientific publications, community outreach, and alternative forms of archaeological storytelling. Subawards are planned as part of this grant.
