The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $2,991,573 Research Traineeship (NRT) grant under CFDA 47.076 STEM Education to the University of New Mexico (UNM) to train 70-80 master's and doctoral students in responsive and resilient artificial intelligence (AI) for autonomous systems engineering. The project, titled "NRT-AI: RESPONSIVE AND RESILIENT AI FOR AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS ENGINEERING (RAISE)", will develop novel theory, methods, tools, and implementations to address challenges in areas such as space and defense autonomy, algorithmic fairness, robotics, and distributed learning. Key project goals include enhancing students' technical proficiency in machine learning, control theory, robotics, and optimization, as well as developing their awareness of the human context of AI and autonomous systems. The project will create a new graduate certificate program in AI and autonomous systems, featuring a two-semester project-based design course with an ethics-as-design approach. In addition, the grant supports student research internships with industry and government partners. UNM has also awarded a $234,508 sub-grant to the Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) to provide external evaluation services for the project.
