This $692,931 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (CFDA 47.076 - STEM Education) aims to address the national shortage of highly qualified STEM teachers, particularly in computer science, for high-need schools. Over the 5-year project period starting October 1, 2024, the University of Rochester will recruit and prepare 21 prospective STEM teachers, including in computer science, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. These teachers will be trained to integrate the New York State computer science and digital fluency learning standards into their STEM instruction and to employ culturally responsive pedagogies to promote equity and inclusion in high-need schools. The project will evaluate the impact, efficacy, and value of these activities, with plans to widely disseminate the findings to engage stakeholders in New York and contribute new knowledge on preparing STEM teachers, especially in computer science and digital fluency.
