The University of Missouri System received a $598,103 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program (CFDA 47.070) to develop cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) methods based on transformers to more accurately infer gene regulatory relationships (gene regulatory networks) from large volumes of omics data. The project aims to achieve three specific objectives: (1) predicting transcription factor binding sites from genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, and protein data using transformers; (2) developing self-supervised graph transformers to infer gene regulatory networks by integrating multiple omics data sources; and (3) using graph transformers to infer gene regulatory networks from single-cell omics data via transfer learning. This work is expected to improve the accuracy of gene regulatory network inference compared to existing unsupervised methods and overcome the challenges of limited labeled data. The project will also develop educational materials and engage with the public and policymakers to advocate for the importance of this scientific research.
