The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $378,235 Project Grant (CFDA #47.075 - Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences) to The Washington University in St. Louis to conduct collaborative research on how individuals, families, and communities adapt their strategies to support culturally appropriate eldercare in response to demographic and socioeconomic changes driven by migration. The 3-year research project, which includes a subaward to Dartmouth College, will use ethnographic methods to investigate the evolving role of institutions, families, and communities in eldercare; how families and communities are adapting to the dispersal of younger caregivers; the emergence of indigenous and outside institutions to fill gaps in care; and how elderly migrants and their families adapt cultural notions of care in new contexts. The research aims to advance cross-cultural understandings in social gerontology and the anthropology of aging and migration, and inform policy and programs for migrant eldercare.
